| The Parish Council is a corporate body that has been granted powers by Parliament including the important authority to raise money through taxation, called the precept. | |||
| The Parish Council is an elected tier of local government. Other tiers, known as principal authorities, have a legal duty to deliver services such as education, town and country planning, environmental health and social services. Parish Councils have the legal power to take action, but have fewer duties and greater freedom to choose what action to take. The Council plays a vital part in representing the interests of the community it serves and improving the quality of life and the local environment. It acts as an advisory agency for planning matters, road safety and other functions of local government. It is also responsible on behalf of the Parish to look after the interests of the land owned by the Parish which includes the village green, the allotments and the recreation ground. | |||
| Leigh Parish Council consists of seven elected Councillors and a Clerk, all of whom are residents of the Parish. | |||
| Members are, Claire Biden, Kevin Gordon, Harriet Hall, Jean Parker (chair), Nick Walter, Richard Stuart, and Paul Wilkinson. The Clerk to the Council is Helen Taneborne. | |||
| The Council has an annual budget of £5,820.00. £4,600.00 is raised from the Community Tax, and £1,220.00 from | |||
| Mole Valley District Council | |||
| All Parish Council meetings are open to the public and are held every month in the Acorns School, odd months (eg Jan, Mar etc) on Thursdays, even months (Feb, Apr etc) on Wednesdays. Parishioners are welcome to attend. An opportunity is provided at the end of the Council Meeting for parishioners to comment on any current matters or raise new issues. It is only by working with parishioners and being made aware of local issues and concerns that the Council can be an effective body in improving the quality of life in Leigh. | |||
| In 2003 the Council initiated a Parish Appraisal and the report is published on this web site. The Report is also published as a separate page on this site. The Council is drawing up an action plan to address the issues raised in the report and progress will be announced on this page and the also in the Leigh Post. | |||
