Where does all our waste go?
The Dorking Advertiser for 19 June 2008 had an interesting page on
recycling, which included a panel explaining what all our recycled waste is used for:
- Glass is reused in aggregates for road building.
By recycling glass, it saves energy in the extraction and transportation
of raw materials
- Metal food cans and tins are sorted out by magnets.
The steel and aluminium cans are baled and sent to UK manufacturers
where then are turned into drink cans, food tins and paint pots
- Plastic bottles are sent to a UK re-processor where
they are turned into many different products including pipes for
cabling, fleece jackets, garden furniture and even recycling baskets
- Mixed card and paper is manually sorted and fed into a
baler, It is then sent to paper mills in the UK and Holland where the
paper is recycled into newspapers, envelopes and catalogues.
Cardboard is recycled into new cardboard fluting.
