Leigh Cricket Match Report received 23 July 2007

Mynthurst, 22nd July 2007. An epic day for cricket. Not, it has to be said, because of the cricket itself (not a game for the spectator) but because Mynthurst, our neighbours and fellow patrons of the delightful Plough pub, had not been opponents for years.

Their ground is scenic. A billiard table outfield framed by chestnut trees, the pitch punctuated by two fine wooden sightscreens. It was like taking a walk back in time, especially as I was informed by their skipper that it was a timed game or nothing. No limited overs cricket here. Leigh won the toss and elected to field. And field we did, their opening partnership putting on a tedious 47 in the first hour and a half, opening bowlers toiling hard for nothing (I expect no sympathy). Oh timed games...

But then the wickets tumbled. Jimmer in his new role at first change taking 3 of their top four (with the best being Mynthurt's number 3, a Cambridge blue, well caught by Doc 'slider' Lawrence) and Junior P taking their left handed opener who looked useful. Somehow, in part due to 30 extras, Mynthurst amassed 123 all out, Abel ripped through 3 of their batsmen (including an off the toe catch by Clarkey who was keeping) and, Jimmer taking another with Big Al Smith mopping up the tail.

Only 123. Piece of cake. Nothing to worry about. Mmmhhh....thank God for Sladey (34) and extras (25). Cameos from Parker (12) and Jimmer (10) could not grab victory and in the end we were glad to escape with a draw, nine men down and 13 runs short.

No game for a fortnight because of the flower show (please let Sladey know if you can help out). Next one therefore is on 5 AUGUST against Forest Green at home. I know Sladey and Hickers can play. I can't and will confirm who will skipper in due course

Two stalwarts of Leigh piled on the runs at an early season match:
