Leigh Cricket team win again - somewhat against the odds!

A report from Alex Parker:

Yesterday morning two things happened that have happened all too rarely this season.  The first was that I arrived at the ground earlier than anticipated.  The second was that I won the toss.

Having elected to bat on a wicket still damp from the heavy June rains Leigh began slowly but surely Pinno and Abel putting on 39 for the first wicket without looking too troubled.  There then followed an epic collapse, the top and middle order perhaps forgetting that this was an all day game and RNVR's captain placing a cordon of fielders in the slips/gully area which seemed to throw people.  Thankfully 'Cookie' Kanna and Big Al Smith restored order with a fine partnership (Alex top scoring with 41) to at least give the Leigh total a semblance of respectability at 130-odd all out.  Still, it was very early in the day (around 2.20pm!) and some people were wondering whether they might actually be able to watch both the grand prix and the men's singles final after all...

Leigh knew they had to keep it very tight in the field and apply some early pressure.  Jimmer, coming down the hill, and I, going up it, managed to do just that imposing a strangle hold on the RNVR batsman that meant they found runs very hard to get from the outset.  Jimmer took a couple as Mike King and Al Smith when they came on.  Bowler of the day was Kanna who bowled superbly, bamboozling the batsmen with some serious spinners.  He took three (including a smart stumping by Pinno) and Pinno Junior grabbed one to leave RNVR feeling very sorry for themselves, Leigh winning by over 60 runs.
