The Leigh and District Cottage Garden SocietyThe Society was established in 1891. Its highlight each year is the Summer Show, normally held on a Saturday in late July, when there is all kinds of fun for young and old, as well as competitions in flowers, floral arrangements, pot plants, fruit and vegetables, home produce and many other traditional categories. Members of the Society are entitled to free admission to the marquee at the Summer Show. From February to November, except August, there is normally at least one event a month. Enquiries about membership (adults £4, children 25p) or becoming a Patron (at least £10 subscription) to Douglas Frost. The generosity of the Patrons enables the Society members' free entry to all talks and visits to local gardens (with light refreshments). Members benefit greatly from a discount of 10% at some local garden centres. |

Most events take place in the Recreation Ground Hall, Middle Street, starting at 7.30pm:
The Crawley Horticultural Society Shop
The shop is run by enthusiastic volunteers and has a wide variety of garden
requirements at low prices. It is situated in Ifield Avenue, West Green, Crawley (tel:
01293 535585), and is open on Sundays 9am to 12 noon, and from 4 March to 23
September on Saturdays . From 5 April to 28 June it is also open from
6.30pm to 8.0pm. You pay a modest subscription to become a member
before using the shop. The Society is looking for shoppers to keep the
project running.
Exchange of old gardening magazines
The Committee has
suggested that old garden magazines could be made available for others or for
exchange through the web site. If you have magazines you would
like to pass on, or if you would like to receive old magazines, please email
the Web Master on to let him know.
HINTS FOR THE MONTH SEPTEMBER
Some thoughts given to the Web Master are:
- Now is the time for compost. All the garden clearance gives the food for the soil in a few years time. Best to have three composts going, one for each of three years. Don't forget the compost from the kitchen: coffee grounds, tea bags, vegetable left-overs etc.
- Sowing green manure on open spaces helps.
- Sow grass seed or turf as necessary.
- Prune cordon and espalier apples and pears, cutting new shoots back to three or four leaves.
- Divide up perennials.
- Take cuttings of geraniums and evergreen shrubs.
- Plant bulbs for a good spring showing.
- Clear out overgrown pond plant life. Fish will require less food as the temperature drops with longer, cooler nights.
- Take off the second harvest of figs which will not ripen.
What hints would you pass on for next month? Please let the Web Master know on editor@leigh-surrey,org.

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing: "Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade.
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner knives.
