HISTORY FROM PARISHIONERS

Cooper's Spinney

Cooper's Spinney is the small piece of woodland bordering on the Leigh Recreation Ground.  It was a bequest to the village of Leigh in 1984 from the late Miss Gladys Cooper of Cooper's Farm.

The original elms were already dead and much of the area was invaded by blackthorn and brambles.  Starting from the original efforts of Dorking Young Farmers, an annual clearance of undergrowth has allowed space for new planting of (native) trees, and has resulted in some natural regeneration of bluebells and other wild flowers.  Some of the earlier plantings are now beginning to show as sturdy young trees.

Over the past twenty years many Leigh villagers and visiting helpers have been involved in the annual clearance and in planting.  Anyone interested in taking part in the next clearance should contact the Parish Council or Edward Brain (tel: 01306 611280), Keeper of the Spinney.
